The Penguin good Australian WINE GUIDE by Huon Hooke and Ralph Kyte-Powell 2003/2004

This is a newer name from the Pyrenees and still pretty well unknown. The wines are made by the Summerfields, who know how to turn Pyrenees grapes into good wine. They deserve a wider audience.

MERLOT 2001 Quality 4 glasses value ****

This is a big, somewhat oaky wine at present, but we suspect it has the guts to turn into a ripper with a little time in the cellar. There are coconutty American oak aromas, a trace of licorice, and the colour is deep. A big, very ripe, concentrated blockbuster that needs tine, and then a mooing steak.

SHIRAZ 2001 Quality 4 glasses value ****

The colour is impressively deep and purplish; the aromas of concentrated plum jam, mint/anise, licorice and almost porty fruit don’t fail to impress. It’s big and syrupy and has a heap of alcohol but somehow avoids hotness. Some will love this, but we wonder how you’d drink it! Try it with barbecued pork spare ribs and plum sauce.

SHIRAZ MERLOT CABERNET FRANC 2001 Quality 4 glasses value ****

The colour is, in a word, colossal. Its density is paralleled by the thick texture and full body of this wine. It has flavours of jam and blackberry syrup, with gunpowder, aniseed and gum leaf/mint overtones. An essency wine that needs cellaring. Then serve with beef ribs and hoi sin sauce.

Tasting notes by Ben Edwards

Polleters 2003 Merlot   Bright garnet in colour the 2003 Polleters Merlot displays vibrant fruits of plum, red berry fruits and a distinctive Pyrenees minerallity. The medium-bodied palate is fresh and lively with nice acidity and soft juicy merlot fruit in abundance. While not a blockbuster, this wine shows very attractive characters and delivers a well-balanced package of fruit, tannin and acid. Enjoy until 2009.

Polleters Mid crimson in colour the 2002 Morgan’s choice blend from Polleters exhibits strong cabernet varietal aromas of essency cassis, hints of minerals and a little green bean/mint aroma that is consistent with the region. The medium to full-bodied palate is a mouthful of flavour and texture with ample fine-grained tannins and spicy oak playing support to layers of juicy dark fruits. The finish is very long, and this wine appears to be integrated now, but will reward a couple of years of patient cellaring. Enjoy until 2012.
