The Penguin good Australian WINE GUIDE by Huon Hooke and Ralph Kyte-Powell 2003/2004This is a newer name from the MERLOT 2001 Quality 4 glasses value ****This is a big, somewhat oaky wine at present, but we suspect it has the guts to turn into a ripper with a little time in the cellar. There are coconutty American oak aromas, a trace of licorice, and the colour is deep. A big, very ripe, concentrated blockbuster that needs tine, and then a mooing steak. SHIRAZ 2001 Quality 4 glasses value ****The colour is impressively deep and purplish; the aromas of concentrated plum jam, mint/anise, licorice and almost porty fruit don’t fail to impress. It’s big and syrupy and has a heap of alcohol but somehow avoids hotness. Some will love this, but we wonder how you’d drink it! Try it with barbecued pork spare ribs and plum sauce.
